Harry Wilco van Genderen was born of Dutch nationality, on the 2nd of September 1927 in Kwala Simpang, Indonesia, as the younger brother of his sister, Any Mary. Growing up on the plantations, he developed a great love for animals, Indonesia and its people. When World War II broke out he was interned as a young boy, primarily with his mother and sister, in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. After the war he was repatriated with his family to the Netherlands where he started high school. Having finished his high school he went backpacking through Europe wanting to discover the world (and drinking) in new cultures and learning the basics of foreign languages like Spanish, Portugese, Greek, Turkish and many more and with his talent for storytelling making many new friends.
Art School
Once back in the Netherlands he started as a ground steward for the KLM in Amsterdam but having been influenced by his talented family, his mother of English decent playing the piano, his father a talented storyteller and conjurer and his sister doing a lot of drawing, he developed the idea to go to Art School. But the Art School of Amsterdam did not accept him. His parents were very much against the idea and refused to help him in his aim. So Henk decided to go to Italy as he said that that was where all great painters came from. In Milan he did many odd jobs to pay his way through Art School and while looking for a job he ended up as a teacher at the International School in Milan and discovered another of his talents, that of teacher. After having finished Art School, to earn a living, he initially stayed on at the International School as an art and English teacher and besides for his paintings he was eventually also known for his inspired English and Malayian language classes. The death of his mother in 1973 was such a great blow for him that he lost all interest in painting.
Talent
By his pupils and friends he was cherished for his talent for entertaining them with his lively acted and mimed stories of his experiences and adventures and his flamboyant life style which were most probably partly inspired by his creative talents and partly by his homosexual nature. In later years he grew to be more philosophical and was also cherished by his friends for their exchange of philosophical ideas and his advice. Until his health started failing he would return every year to Indonesia and enjoy acting as guide to whoever had an interest in discovering his beloved Emerald Islands.
His paintings depict his love of animals and his love of Indonesia. One also sees the influence of his idol Picasso in his style of painting. After a couple of very difficult years of failing health he died on the 12th of February 2006 in Milan having lived and worked in Italy for more than 40 years.

Harry Wilco van Genderen, di nazionalità olandese, nasce il 2 settembre 1927 a Kwala Simpang in Indonesia, fratello minore di Any Mary. Cresciuto nelle piantagioni indonesiane, sviluppa un profondo amore per gli animali, per l’Indonesia e la sua popolazione. Da giovanissimo, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, viene internato in un campo di prigionieri di guerra giapponese insieme a sua madre e sua sorella. Alla fine della guerra viene rimpatriato con la sua famiglia nei Paesi Bassi dove inizia a frequentare la scuola superiore. Finita la scuola superiore, comincia a viaggiare con zaino in spalla per tutta Europa alla scoperta del mondo e di nuove culture, per imparare le basi delle lingue straniere come lo spagnolo, il portoghese, il greco, il turco e molte altre lingue. Grazie al suo talento narrativo riesce a trovare molti nuovi amici.
Scuola d’arte
Tornato nei Paesi Bassi, lavora inizialmente come steward da terra per la KLM ad Amsterdam ma, influenzato dai numerosi talenti presenti nella sua famiglia – sua madre inglese, pianista; suo padre, un narratore di talento e prestigiatore; sua sorella, appassionata di pittura – ben presto decide di iscriversi alla Scuola d’Arte. La Scuola d'Arte di Amsterdam, però, non lo ammette agli studi. I suoi genitori, non condividendo questa sua scelta, rifiutano di aiutarlo nella realizzazione di questo obiettivo. Henk decide di andare in Italia poiché quello è il Paese dei grandi pittori. A Milano svolge i più svariati lavori per riuscire a pagare gli studi alla Scuola d’Arte e, in attesa di un nuovo lavoro, finisce per entrare nella International School di Milano come insegnante scoprendo così un altro dei suoi talenti, quello dell’insegnamento. Terminati gli studi alla Scuola d’Arte, per guadagnarsi da vivere, rimane a lavorare alla International School come insegnante d’arte e di inglese. Oltre ai suoi quadri, Henk è conosciuto per le sue appassionati lezioni di inglese e di malesiano. La scomparsa della madre nel 1973 rappresenta per lui un evento molto doloroso e così perde il suo interesse verso la pittura.
Talento
I suoi studenti ed i suoi amici lo amano per il suo talento di intrattenitore, per il suo piacevole modo di recitare e di mimare storie appartenenti alle sue esperienze di vita ed avventure, per il suo estroso stile di vita probabilmente dovuto, in parte, ai suoi talenti creativi e, in parte, alla sua natura omosessuale. Negli anni seguenti, Henk diventa più filosofico, ulteriore motivo, questo, per essere apprezzato maggiormente da parte dei suoi amici ed amato per i piacevoli scambi di idee filosofiche. Per molti anni, finché il suo stato di salute glielo premette, ritorna ogni anno in Indonesia dove si propone di fare da guida a chiunque voglia scoprire le sue care Emerald Islands.
Dai suoi quadri emerge tutto il suo amore per gli animali e per l’Indonesia. Nelle sue opere, e dunque nel suo stile, si può notare l’influenza del suo idolo, Picasso. Dopo un paio di anni difficili caratterizzati da seri problemi di salute, muore il 12 febbraio 2006 a Milano, dopo oltre 40 anni di permanenza in Italia.
